As the picture on the right shows, sludge builds up in central heating systems from the day they are commissioned. The sludge is a product of corrosion that occurs when different metals come in contact with one another in the presence of water. This sludge is a problem as over time it will start to block central heating pipework. Initially, water flow through pipes and radiators reduces. The initial signs of this are radiators that are cold at the bottom and hot at the top.
As sludge buildup continues, the problem gets worse. Water flow starts reducing throughout the heating system. This causes problems for the circulation pump (which relies on water passing through it to keep it cool). Eventually the lack of water flow can start to damage the boiler. Older boilers in particular may not have a safety thermostat so the reduced flow of water through the heat exchanger causes the water passing through the boiler to boil. In extreme circumstances this can send boiling water shooting up into the loft tanks, obviously a very dangerous situation.
Powerflushing is not always necessary. Most plumbers won't tell you this as they can get a day's work each time they powerflush a system. Before powerflushing we recommend a central heating cleaner is added to the system for 1 week. We then return and drain down the system before refilling, testing and adding an inhibitor chemical. If this solves your problems then no powerflush is needed.
If you are still having problems then we connect a powerflush pump to your central heating system (usually in place of the circulation pump). The heating tank in your loft is removed and cleaned. Having converted your system to a 'sealed' system, we begin cleaning your system. With modern powerflush pumps there is no need to clean each radiator seperately except on very large heating systems.
As soon as we dump the first of the dirty water down the drain you will see first hand how filthy central heating systems can get! Powerflushes start from £250 including all chemicals. Just complete our online quote form and we will get back to you with a price.
