Dealing With a Burst Pipe
- Turn the stopcock valve fully clockwise. If you can't find the stopcock then read our guide on how to find your stopcock. Regardless of the plumbing system in your home, if water can't get in to replace the water that is leaking the leak will eventually stop.
- Now turn on all the hot and cold taps in the property. This will drain any tanks and cylinders you may have. As soon as these are drained down the leak should stop quickly unless...
- The leak is on the central heating system. If once the taps have stopped running there is still water leaking then you need to turn off your boiler and find a drain-off valve on one of your radiators (on the ground floor radiators).
- Attach a hose to the drain-off valve, run the other end outside (into a flower bed or similar to avoid staining patios with rusty water) and open the drain-off valve (turn it anti-clockwise). You will now be draining the heating system. The system will drain faster if you open the upstairs bleed valves on the radiators and if you drain the system through more than one drain-off valve.
Now you have minimised the damage to your home this is a good time to call us to fix your plumbing.
Of course prevention is better than cure, so if you are just browsing then read more about preventing a burst pipe.
